  • Discussion

Type. In thickets, Villarrica, Paraguay, July 1931, Pedro Jorgensen 3694 (holotype NY).

Paratype. BRAZIL. Goias: 20 km S of Caiaponia, road to Jatai, Serra do Caiapó, 19 Oct 1964, Prance & Silva 59509.

In this variation of var caruto the calyx and hypanthium are densely tomentellose without, and the bracts are densely strigillose without. Also, the pedicels are more elongated, usually 15-35 mm long, and the upper surface of the corolla lobes is sparsely and shortly pubescent, as in other collections from Paraguay, noted above, with only a relatively short hirsutulous area in the basal portion.
