Description
Family Description - Small, free-floating (sometimes barely submersed) aquatics, consisting of a flat or thickened thallus (often called a frond), with or without 1–several short unbranched roots; frond with a reproductive pouch on each margin near the base, or a single such pouch on the upper surface; reproduction mainly by vegetative budding in the pouch(es), the new plants sooner or later breaking away; infl (seldom produced) in one of the 2 marginal pouches or in the single pouch on the upper surface, subtended by a tiny, membranous spathe when in a marginal pouch; perianth none; staminate fls 1 or 2, each consisting of a single anther on a short filament; pistillate fl solitary, naked, composed of a unilocular ovary with a short terminal style and 1–8 basal ovules, ripening into a utricle; embryo straight, monocotyledonous, sometimes without a radicle; endosperm scanty and sheathing the embryo, or wanting. 4/37.
