    Family Description - Fls small and inconspicuous, hydrophilous, in small, axillary, usually complex and sympodial infls, unisexual, the plants monoecious; perianth wanting, or of 3 tiny, scale-like, unvasculated, basally connate tep; stamen actually or apparently solitary, with 1–6 thecae and 2–12 microsporangia; pollen spheroidal, monosulcate or more often lacking an exine; pistils (1–)3–4(–9), distinct; ovule solitary, ventral-apical, pendulous; fr of achenes or drupelets; endosperm wanting; cotyledon circinately coiled above the swollen hypocotyl; slender, much branched, glabrous, submersed aquatic herbs, ± rhizomatous and rooted in the substrate; lvs alternate or opposite, or the distal ones seemingly in whorls of 3–4, with a linear or filiform, 1-nerved or partly 3-nerved blade and a sometimes stipule-like sheath. 4/7–8.
