Description
Description - Plant stemless, flowering 6-12 dm high. Leaves all persistent, dimorphic, the outer with broadly ovate dark castaneous sheaths that are covered dorsally above the base with a membrane of fused scales and reduced slenderly subulate blades laxly armed with coarse recurved spines; inner leaves from 6 dm to over 1.4 m long, slightly constricted above the sheath; sheaths more orbicular; blades ensiform, filiform-attenuate, 10-22 mm wide, glabrous above, densely white-lepidote beneath, serrate at base with spines 2 mm long. Scape erect, elongate, furfuraceous or becoming glabrous; scape-bracts erect, narrowly triangular, tomentose-lepidote, the upper much shorter than the internodes. Inflorescence laxly racemose or rarely branched, to 4 dm long, few-many-flowered, sparsely furfuraceous or glabrous. Floral bracts ovate, acuminate or apiculate, 10-20 mm long, from shorter than the pedicels to slightly exceeding them; flowers erect to subspreading, fragrant like pineapple; pedicels 15-25 mm long, Sepals narrowly subtriangular, obtuse, 20-30 mm long; petals to 9 cm long, red or green with purple lines, bearing a large oblong scale; stamens included; ovary 5/6 superior. Seeds long-caudate.
