Discussion
The relationship of this species is surely closest S. pinnata and S. macrophylla, judging from considerable material of the former but only photographs and descriptions of the latter. Swartzia amplifolia differs from both by the connection of the primary veins in submarginal vein. This varies considerably; in Haught 1446, the marginal vein is very clear, quite as distinct as the primary veins, and there is scant undulation in its progress along the length of the leaflets. In other collections both the distinctness and degree of undulation of the marginal nerve vary independently of other characters.
The three varieties comprising this species differ first in texture and form of the leaflets; those of var. rigida are very obviously differently shaped and quite rigid with the primary to tertiary veins strongly salient beneath. The remaining two varieties are separable on the size of the anthers of the larger stamens, the size of the buds, and the geographic distribution. -
