    Description - Tree or large shrub 4-12 m tall, the branchlets micro-strigulose to puberulous; stipules caducous, falcate-oblong, acute, ca 2.5 mm long and 1 mm wide; petioles terete, minutely or microscopically strigulose to puberulous, glabrescent; rachis micro-strigulose to minutely puberulous, glabrescent; leaflets 2-6-jugate, the petiolules 4-9 mm long, strigulose to puberulous, canaliculate on the upper surface, the blades of the lowermost pair smaller and sometimes differently shaped, the blades oval- to oblong-elliptic, or elliptic, the base obtuse or subobtuse, the apex bluntly acute to acuminate, or the leaflets rounded at both base and apex, the upper surfaces glabrous or minutely strigulose on the costa, micro-strigulose beneath, at least on the principal veins, the venation conspicuous, the costa and primary veins plane to impressed on the upper surface, salient beneath, the primary veins connected submarginally by a more or less undulating, sometimes partly discontinuous vein; inflorescence 20-43 cm long, racemose to panicled-racemose, cauligerous, the axis minutely strigulose to puberulous, the bracts persistent, triangular, 1-2 mm long and wide, acute, minutely strigulose to puberulous externally, glabrous within, the bracteoles lacking; pedicels minutely puberulous to micro-strigulose; buds globose, 6-12 mm diameter, minutely strigulose; calyx segments 3 or 4, persistent, glabrous within, minutely strigulose externally; petal yellow, glabrous, the claw 2-3.5 mm long, the blade rounded in outline, 10-20 mm long and wide; larger stamens 2, glabrous or the filaments minutely strigulose, the filaments 10-22 mm long, the anthers 3-6 mm long, 0.5-2 mm wide, oblong, the smaller stamens glabrous, the filaments 6-12 mm long, the anthers oblong, 1.5-3 mm long, the pollen of all stamens mostly deltoid-globose, ca 31 µ long and wide, some globose, 26-28.5 µ diameter; stigma capitate to capitellate; style 1.5-3 mm long, glabrous to sericeous; ovary arcuate-linear, densely velutinous or sericeous, the gynophore 5-10 mm long, densely velutinous to sericeous; fruit moniliform, brown-sericeous, 1-several-seeded.

    (Fig. 11). Forests of central and western coastal Colombia and eastern Peru and near sea level to 2100 m alt.; possibly also in Esmeraldas, Ecuador (see remarks under var. colombiana, below).
