Description
Genus Description - Medium to large perennials. Leaves basal or cauline. Inflorescences paniculate, cymose, or rarely spicate; spikes compound, bisexual; scales imbricate, the basal (1)3(4) subtending a staminate spikelet, the distal 3-6 sterile; pistillate spikelet terminal (or appearing so), globose. Fruits achene-like, bony; hypogynium cup-like, adnate to fruit, spongy.
