Description
Genus Description - Tall plants bearing subterranean bulbs. Leaves basal, linear or lanceolate, sessile or petiolate. Inflorescence an umbellate cluster few to many flowers subtended by 2 to several spathelike, scarious bracts, the scape solid, angled or compressed. Flowers large, showy, sessile or short-pedicellate; perianth white, greenish, or red and yellow, with a long, cylindrical, straight or curved tube, subtended by 2 membranous, narrow bracts, the lobes linear, spreading or recurved, subequal; stamens inserted in the throat of the perianth tube, the filaments basally fused into a cup, the anthers linear, versatile; ovary with 2 to several ovules in each locule, the style filiform, long-exserted, the stigma minute, capitate. Fruit a fleshy capsule; seeds usually 1 or 2 per locule, large, fleshy, green.
