    Genus Description - Small trees or shrubs. Leaves simple, entire, alternate, opposite, pseudoverticillate or aggregate near ends of branches. Flowers actinomorphic, 5-merous, bisexual, in terminal or axillary racemes or solitary; calyx of distinct or basally connate sepals; corolla short, bell-shaped; staminodes 5, petal-like, inserted on corolla tube; stamens 5, spreading, the filaments basally connate, the anthers opening by longitudinal slits; ovary ovoid to globose, of connate carpels, sometimes appearing 4-6-locular owing to false partitioning, the ovules pendulous, 2-20 per locule, the styles connate or 2-3-branched, the stigmas lobate or minute. Fruit an indehiscent, leathery berry, with persistent style, subtended by the persistent sepals; seeds few to several.

    Distribution and Ecology - A neotropical genus of about 50 species.
