Description
Genus Description - Erect herbs or subshrubs, stems and leaf margins spiny, producing abundant cream-colored to yellowish sap. Leaves alternate, sessile. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, solitary, axillary, sessile; bracts and bracteoles present, foliaceous; calyx of 2-3 deciduous sepals; petals 4-6; stamens numerous, the anther longitudinally dehiscent; ovary l-locular, with numerous ovules, the stigma nearly sessile, capitate. Fruit a capsule, with valvate dehiscence; seeds numerous, small. A genus of 11 species, native to southern North America.
