    Genus Description - Dioecious or polygamodioecious shrubs or small trees. Leaves opposite, simple, short-petiolate, with entire or serrate margins. Flowers apetalous, evanescent, in short, bracteate, axillary racemes or fascicle-like clusters; calyx cup-shaped and parted into 4-8 (often irregular) lobes; corolla wanting; stamens 2 or 4, the anthers shorter than the filaments; abortive stamens 0-4; nectary disk absent; ovary with a short style and a 2-lobed or simple stigma. Fruit a small drupe.

    Distribution and Ecology - A genus of 15 species ranging from the southern United States through Central America and the West Indies to (reportedly) South America.
