Description
Genus Description - glabrous annual herbs; stems 4-angled. Leaves opposite, sessile, lanceolate or oblanceolate, entire; stipules wanting. Flowers 4-5-merous, in axillary fascicles or cymes; hypanthium bell-shaped, becoming globose in fruit; calyx with accessory teeth or these lacking; petals 4 or wanting, early deciduous; stamens 4 or 8; style exserted or included. Capsule irregularly dehiscent, with thin, smooth wall. A genus of about 25 species with worldwide distribution.
