    Genus Description - Monoecious or dioecious herbs, shrubs, or small trees, not producing milky latex. Leaves alternate, often with serrate margins; stipules deciduous. Flowers borne in axillary or terminal, unisexual or bisexual spikes or panicles. Allomorphic flowers produced distally on inflorescence in a few species. Staminate flowers several at each node, subtended by a minute bract; calyx 4-lobed; corolla and nectary disk wanting; stamens 4-8 with free or connate filaments, the anthers elongate and twisted; pistillode present. Pistillate flowers l(-3) per node, subtended by a foliaceous bract; calyx 3-5-lobed; ovary of 3 uniovular carpels, the styles simple or manybranched, filiform. Fruit a 3-lobed capsule with 1 seed per locule.
