    Species Description - Morphologically and ecologically intermediate between nos. 17 [Scirpus fluviatilis (Torr.) A. Gray] and 19 [Scirpus robustus Pursh], but apparently forming a persistent set of populations; infl usually relatively open, as in no. 17; bristles persistent, half to fully as long as the achene; style mostly bifid and achene planoconvex, intermediate in size and shape. Brackish transitional zones of tidal river-systems, above no. 19 and below no. 17; Me. to Ga. (S. novae-angliae, with distinctly trigonous achenes)
