    Description - Low perennial plants forming great cushions or polsters. Leaves very densely imbricate along the short stems, sparsely lepidote; sheaths ample; blades triangular, not at all contracted at base, stiff, sparsely spinose-serrate. Scape none. Flowers 1-3, fasciculate at the ends of the stems, subsessile, perfect. Sepals convolute, free, more or less asymmetric, glabrous; petals convolute, free, much exceeding the sepals, each bearing a single basal appendage, free after anthesis; stamens included or slightly exserted; filaments free, elongate; anthers dorsifixed slightly above the base; pollen grains longitudinally sulcate; ovary superior; ovules numerous, short-caudate. Capsule pyriform, septicidal and slightly loculicidal; seeds fusiform, bicaudate.
