Description
Species Description - Stem erect, unbranched, to 2 m tall, 5-10 mm diam., with 14-50 ridges, stomata in single lines, one on each side of the groove; sheath with length to width ratio of approx. 1:1, with two dark girdles, one at top edge, other at middle of sheath, ashen gray between; branches only on damaged plants; strobili terminal on stem, ca. 15 mm long, with black apiculum.

Usually in moist areas by streams or seeps; frequent over much of the state; Centro, Etla, Huajuapan, Miahuatlán, Sola de Vega; 1900-2900 m. Mexico (BC, Son, Chih, NL, Sin, Jal, Pue, Mex, Oax, Chis); temperate North America; Guat; northeastern Asia.
