  • Discussion

Lappula pustulata Macbr., Contr. Gray Herb. 48: 39. 1916. Lappula heliocarpa Brand, Feddes Repert. Sp. Nov. 18: 310. 1922. Hackelia heliocarpa (Brand) Brand, Pflanzenr. IV 252(Heft 97): 120. 1931. Type: MEXICO. CHIHUAHUA. In shade of ledges, canyon below Cusihuiriachic, September 21, 1888, C. G. Pringle 2004 (F!, K!, MO!, PH!, UC!, US!). Type. MEXICO. Chihuahua. Hills west of Chihuahua, October 23, 1885, C. G. Pringle 563 (holotype, GH!). Hackelia ursina var pustulata is distinguished from variety ursina by the presence of intramarginal prickles on at least some of the nutlets of an inflorescence, absence of conspicuous pustulate-based hairs on the midcauline leaves, longer pedicels at anthesis, and somewhat broader corolla limb. It has a much wider geographic range than the other two varieties, ranging from southeastern Arizona to Chihuahua, Mexico. Some specimens show intergradation between variety pustulata and variety ursina; Apache County, New Mexico, White Mountains, Kearney & Peebles 12251 (ARIZ, US) and Cochise County, New Mexico, Cave Creek, Gentry & Jensen 2272. Additional field work is required in Mexico for a better understanding of variety pustulata.
