    Species Description - Glabrous, the stem leafy, but one leaf seen. Sheath of petiole about 2 dm. long, closely sheathing, the petiole proper 1.5 cm. long, stout. Blade 1.5 dm. long, suborbicular or broader than long. Culm above the leaf bearing one or more aphyllous sheaths at the base of peduncles which develop later than the terminal one, these sheaths more than 1 dm. long, herbaceous, acute. Peduncles about 2 dm. long, slender, about as long as the spike, which is compressed. Scales imbricate, 2 cm. long, the summit rounded, coriaceous. Ovary 3 or 4 mm. long, cylindric, the upper half narrower, truncate with a setaceous ring at the base of the calyx, which is 4 mm. long, the lobes equal, hyaline, obtusish. Corolla-tube about 12 mm. long, the rest of the flower 5 mm. long. Petals oval, one considerably broader than the others, a little longer than the obovate petaloid stamens, the lateral appendage minute. Lip nearly equaling the petals, very broad, of deeper color. Style very strongly involute; if extended, nearly equaling the lip and longer than the stamen.
