  • Description

Species Description - Probably deciduous tree. Leaves 5-12 × 2-5 cm, chartaceous, narrowly obovate or sometimes obovate, subacute to shortly acuminate at apex, cuneate and slightly attenuate at base, sparsely appressed-pubescent when mature but usually more densely so on main veins; domatia weak in secondary vein-axils but with dense hair-tufts. Venation as in T. australis. Petiole 0.5-1 cm, appressed-pubescent to subglabrous, eglandular. Inflorescences at fruiting 1.8-3.1 cm, simple, more or less capitate, probably with all flowers bisexual (fruits to apex of rhachis); peduncle at fruiting 1.5-2.7 cm, appressed-pubescent; rhachis 0.2-0.4 cm, appressed-pubescent. Flowers unknown. Fruits single or few and crowded on short rhachis, 1.3-1.5 × (2.5-)3-4.4 cm, flattened, transversely oblong in side view, emarginate at apex, retuse at base, subglabrous; wings 2, often with rudimentary third wing, fairly stiff, equal, 1.3-2 cm wide, rounded to narrowly rounded or obtuse laterally, basiscopically curved; body 0.5-0.8 mm wide, sharply keeled on both faces.

  • Discussion

Illustrations. Figs. 74r (fr), 91i (lf).

The fruits are wider even than in Terminalia reitzii and the wings are conspicuously basiscopically curved; nevertheless, it is possible that it will prove to be an abnormal and extreme form of T. reitzii or T. triflora.
