  • Description

Species Description - Shrub to 1 m, possibly taller; young shoots and branchlets yellowish to reddish brown, glabrous or sparsely lepidote, trichomes with short, 1 -celled stalks and few-celled, flattened heads. Leaves distinctly pseu-doverticillate, straight, light green when dried; blade narrowly obovate or oblanceolate, sometimes obovate or broadly elliptic, 2.5-8.5 x 1-7.5 cm, coriaceous and very tough, ca. 1 mm thick, seemingly glabrous, base attenuate, sometimes shortly so, apex obtuse or acute with a rigid spine 1-2 mm long, sides more or less ascending from midvein, margins more or less revolute; midvein prominent beneath, level with surface above; lateral veins usually invisible, both surfaces striate, but often vaguely so above; extraxylary sclerenchyma abundant, abaxially arranged in distinct bundles 15-40(-60) cells thick, adaxially in a layer 8-20 cells thick, lower side of layer strongly lobed, abaxial bundles separated from epidermis by 1-3 mesophyll cells, adaxial layer adjacent to a 1- or partly 2-layered hypoderm; crystals sparse in mesophyll, lacking in epidermis and hypoderm; petiole 0.5-1.5 mm long, glabrous. Racemes solitary or sometimes in pairs, with 2-5 flowers; rachis 3-25 mm long, 1-1.5 mm thick, glabrous; bracts 0.5 mm long, fused to lower part of pedicel for 3-8 mm; pedicels 12-25 mm long. Calyx lobes suborbicular, 3-3.5 x 3-4 mm, margins appressed to fruit, ciliate. Corolla orange-yellow, urceolate or campanulate; tube at least 5.5 mm long, clearly exceeding calyx. Pistil 4-5 mm long; ovules 40-80 in 3-5 rows. Fruits subglobose, 11-15 mm diam., pericarp 0.3-0.6 mm thick, surface smooth or faintly rugose. Seeds 1-3, subglobose or more or less flattened, 4.5-5.5 mm long.

Distribution and Ecology - Endemic to SE Cuba (Fig. 55) mostly in vicinity of Moa in dry forests and thickets from near sea level to 900 m. Flower buds Apr, Jul, and Sep; fruiting Apr, Jul, Aug, and Dec.

  • Discussion

Jacquinia roigii appears to be most closely related to J. aculeata, which it resembles in having strongly pseudoverticillate leaves, short racemes (but long pedicels), and ciliate calyx margins. It differs from J. aculeata by its larger and much coarser, oblanceolate to elliptic leaves; sparsely lepidote to subglabrous, young shoots; and larger flowers.
