  • Description

Species Description - Plants small; green, yellowish, or brownish. Stem irregularly and often densely branched in one plane; central strand present, slender; pseudoparaphyllia lanceolate or triangular or ovate, often irregular; paraphyllia absent or often present but sparse, lanceolate-linear or ovate; axillary hairs with 1-6-celled upper part, this hyaline when young, upper cells mostly rectangular or short-rectangular. Stem leaves 0.6-0.9 mm long, densely inserted, strongly spreading or squarrose (in small plants sometimes partially imbricate) from erect to patent base, ovate or broadly ovate or cordate, narrowing abruptly to short acumen that constitutes 32-45% of leaf length, concave, decurrent 35% to almost all the way to leaf below; acumen in basal part channeled; apex acuminate; margin denticulate or finely so almost throughout; costa double and short, ending 17-30% of way up leaf; median laminal cells 20.0-54.5 × 5.0-7.5 µm (outside the area to 73.5 µm long), incrassate, not or slightly porose, scattered cells distally and abaxially prorate; upper alar cells (transverse-rectangular or) quadrate or rectangular; basal alar cells rectangular or long-rectangular, hardly widened (to 11.0-14.5 µm wide); alar group small, ovate or oblong, extending slightly up along leaf margin and inward from leaf margin 20-35% of distance to leaf middle at insertion. Inner perichaetial leaves narrowing ± abruptly to acuminate apex. Seta 8-13 mm long; capsule curved or slightly curved, horizontal or sometimes inclined. Exostome outside cross-striolate in lower part. Spores 8.0-17.0 µm, finely papillose to smooth.

  • Discussion

Campylophyllum halleri was reported from Mexico (e.g., Delgadillo et al., 1995; Sharp et al., 1994), and also occurs in Guatemala. The species is easily recognized by its densely inserted, strongly squarrose leaves and short leaf acumina.

  • Distribution

Mexico (3700 m a.s.l.) and Guatemala (3500 m). Widespread mainly in temperate N America and Eurasia. Found in relatively dry calcareous places, usually on rocks; rarely an epiphyte.
