Species Description - Shrub 3-7 m tall. Stems slightly sulcate, nearly terete, ferruginous-velutinous. Leaves imparipinnate or paripinnate; distal process acicular, to 1.5 cm long, early deciduous, leaving a truncate base; leaflets 8-11, alternate, opposite or subopposite, 19-75 × 7-19 cm, elliptic to oblanceolate, chartaceous, the adaxial surface completely glabrous or velutinous along the sunken primary and secondary veins, the abaxial surface pilose to sparsely velutinous, especially along veins, the venation brochidodromus, with secondary veins alternate or subopposite, tertiary veins clathrate-reticulate, prominent on abaxial surface, the margins wavy, the apex abruptly acuminate, mucronate, the base obtuse to rounded, slightly asymmetrical; petiolules 8-15 mm long, velutinous, nearly cylindrical; rachis 16-32 cm long, velutinous, striate, nearly terete; petioles 27-56 cm long, velutinous, striate, terete, slightly enlarged at base. Thyrses fasciculate, cauliflorous; cataphylls acicular, to 1.2 cm long, velutinous, congested in supra-axillary buds; axes 2-15 cm long, angled, velutinous-tomentose; bracts subulate, persistent, 2-A mm long, sparsely tomentose to glabrous; bracteoles similar to bracts but smaller; dichasia compound, sessile; pedicels ca. 1 mm long, articulate above or below the middle. Flowers congested along inflorescence axes. Calyx (2.5) 4-5.2 mm long, sericeous-tomentose, the sepals ovate-deltate, ca. 1.5-2.3 mm long, obtuse at apex; petals elliptic to nearly spatulate, obtuse at apex, long-attenuate at base, 5-6.7 mm long, abaxially glabrous, adaxially papillate; appendages as long or slightly longer than the petals, oblong or deltate, erect, adnate to attenuate base of petal, adaxially villous, abaxially sparsely villous and papillate; disc poculiform, 5-lobed, hirsute, ca. 1 mm tall; stamens 8, the filaments unequal, 2.5-3.5 mm long, glabrous, the anthers 0.7-1.2 mm long, ellipsoid, glabrous, apiculate at apex. Fruits (young) ellipsoid, ferruginous, sericeous-velutinous, the pericarp thick-woody.

  • Discussion

This species differs from T. clathrata by its velutinous pubescence (vs. abaxially glabrous leaflets; puberulent stems and leaf rachis). The specific epithet refers to the indumentum of stems, leaf rachis and inflorescence axes.

Phenology. Collected in flower in March and September, and fruit in April.

  • Distribution

Known only from the lowlands of Colombia, [upland mixed Guadua forest.
