  • Discussion

Buddleja corrugata is closely related to both B. utahensis of the Mojave Desert and to B. marrubiifolia of the Chihuahuan Desert. Judging from the discovery of B. corrugata subsp. moranii in central Sonora, it might be suggested that this subspecies once had a larger distribution than at present, and that a northern extension in the Sonoran Desert might have evolved into B. utahensis, when drought spread, perhaps in Middle Pliocene (Axelrod, 1948). Buddleja marrubiifolia is morphologically very close to Buddleja corrugata subsp. corrugata, differing primarily in its single terminal head and larger seeds. These characters are most likely derived traits in this series and suggest that B. marrubiifolia was derived from a B. corrugata ancestor.

  • Distribution

In Baja California Sur, Monserrate Island in the Gulf of California, and in a few locations in Chihuahua and Sonora, Mexico; growing on limestone at 200-1900 m. Flowering primarily from February to June. This species is not mentioned in Shreve & Wiggins, 1964, nor in Wiggins, 1980.
