    Description - Plant stemless, flowering 50-75 cm high. Leaves numerous, to 7 dm long, densely appressed-lepidote beneath; sheaths elliptic, indistinct; blades ligulate, acuminate, 2-3 cm wide. Scape erect, glabrous; scape-bracts strict, imbricate, elliptic with narrowly triangular blades, pale green with red stripes. Inflorescence bipinnate, lax, 15-20 cm long; primary bracts broadly ovate, acute or acuminate, much exceeded by the flowers; spikes spreading, densely 2-1-flowered. Floral bracts ovate, 15-20 mm long, centrally rugose; flowers subsessile. Sepals lanceolate or elliptic, to 25 mm long, short-connate; petals 5-6 cm long, stramineous.
