Discussion
Normally var. pringlei is inconspicuously strigulose with appressed or subap- pressed hairs, in this respect agreeing with var. painteri and var. wislizeni. An otherwise identical plant pilosulous overall with erect and slightly longer hairs has been collected twice on the north fork of rio Papaloapan in Puebla (near Coxcatlan and San Luis Tultitlanapa) and once in southeastern Oaxaca (near Yautepee). Morphologically this variant has the same claim to taxonomic recognition as has var. villosa, but it has not established an independent area of dispersal. The type-locality of Cassia pringlei is Tomellin on the south fork of the Papaloapan and several collections of typical var. pringlei have been made in the valley of Oaxaca, these together lying on a direct line between the known stations for the pilosulous form.
