    Species Description - Microphyllous subshrubs at anthesis 0.5-1 m, with stout terete striate stems ± 1.5-3.5 mm diam freely branched distally, some branchlets tapering into a stout thornlike leafless apex, the stems and foliage minutely pilosulous throughout with incurved hairs ±0.1-0.2 mm, the distant 2-4-foliolate lvs shorter than the internodes, the lfts subconcolorous gray-green dull, the 1-4-fld racemes axillary from distal lvs forming a sparse narrow thyrse. Stipules erect appressed setiform 0.3-2 mm, tardily deciduous. Lvs 1-2 cm; petiole including obscurely differentiated pulvinus 3-6 mm, at middle 0.3-0.45 mm diam, shallowly grooved ventrally; rachis 0-3.5 mm; gland between proximal (or only) pair, ovoid or conic-subulate 0.2-0.8 mm, puberulent; pulvinules 0.4-0.7 mm; lfts of most lvs 1 pair, of a few lvs 2 pairs, the distal (or only) pair obliquely elliptic or narrowly obovate, abruptly acute or subobtuse 6-16 x 2.5-9 mm, at base cordate on proximal and rounded to cuneate on distal side, the midrib with 5-7 pairs of fine camptodrome (and few weak intercalary) secondary nerves immersed or faintly raised above, bluntly prominulous beneath, a few connecting tertiary veinlets visible beneath only. Peduncles 2-13 mm, the raceme-axis 0-7 mm; bracts ovate subscarious 1.2-2 mm; pedicels 5-12 mm; fl-buds obovoid obtuse puberulent; sepals submembra- nous, often fuscous at middle but otherwise greenish-yellow pallid-margined unequal, the long inner ones oblong-ovate ±6.5 mm, the outermost ± half as long; longest petal ±15 mm; androecium glabrous, the filaments of 4 median stamens ±0.5 mm, of 3 abaxial ones ±3 mm, the anthers of median stamens ±4 mm, abruptly truncate, the divaricate beak 0.5 mm, the anthers of abaxial ones lunately incurved 7-9 mm, rounded at base, the very short beak obliquely truncate 2-porose; style 1.5 x 0.15-0.2 mm erect. Pod ascending, the stipe ±5 mm, the turgidly linear body ±10 x 0.55 cm, bluntly carinate by the ventral suture (this 0.5-0.8 mm wide), the finely rugulose evenulose valves becoming papery brownish; seeds obliquely basipetal, compressed-pyriform ±5.5 x 3 mm, the smooth testa lustrous black, the oblong-elliptic areole ±2.5-3.5 x 1 mm.-Collections: 8.

    Distribution and Ecology - Open brush-woodlands and gullied barrancas, ±280-850 m, along the e. foothills of the Andes and w. margin of Gran Chaco drained by rios Parapeti, Pilcomayo and Bermejo between 20° and 23°S latitude in Tarija, Bolivia and in n.-e. Salta and extreme n.-w. Formosa, Argentina.-Fl. XI-IV.
