    Description - Plant flowering to 1 m high. Leaves in a broadly funnelform rosette, arching, 4-8 dm long; sheaths small and indistinct, densely brown-lepidote; blades ligulate, broadly acute or rounded, apiculate, 4-6 cm wide, very sparsely lepidote on both sides. Scape erect; scape-bracts erect and clasping the scape, densely imbricate, broadly ovate, acute. Inflorescence simple, dense, many-flowered, lanceolate or oblong, acute or acuminate, strongly compressed, to 55 cm long and 6 cm wide. Floral bracts very densely imbricate, many times longer than the internodes, narrowly triangular, acuminate, 6-8 cm long, sharply carinate, more or less incurved toward apex, thin, bright red, glabrous; pedicels 4 mm long. Sepals elliptic, obtuse, 25 mm long, wholly yellow or red at apex; petals ligulate, to 8 cm long, yellow, bearing 2 large scales at base; stamens exserted.
