    Variety Description - Perennial cespitose herbs, 10-90 cm tall. Rhizome densely branching. Culms longitudinally ridged. Auricles ca. 0.5 mm long, wider than long, rounded, cartilaginous. Leaf blade terete or channelled, when channelled the central part of the x.s. is thicker than the edges, adaxial side with or without a narrow band of hyaline cells occupying less than 1/3 of the width. Inflorescence composed of several unilateral cymes with the flowers, at least in part, regularly and equidistantly inserted. Lower inflorescence bract varying, shorter or longer than the inflorescence but usually conspicuously longer than the upper bracts. Tepals straight or only slightly recurved. Capsule shorter to longer than the tepals at maturity, thick walled, valves recurved along the seams and the capsule therefore with 3 low ridges or slightly 3-keeled.

  • Discussion

    Distribution and Ecology: Juncus tenuis var. dichotomus occurs in E North America from Massachusetts to Oklahoma and Texas. In the Neotropical region it occurs on Jamaica, through the Mexican highlands, and again in Bolivia and SE Brazil, reaching into Uruguay and the province of Buenos Aires in Argentina. It grows in wet places along streams and roads, in bogs, etc., at elevations from sea level in Uruguay up to 1000 m in SE Brazil and 2500 m in Bolivia. In Mexico it has been collected at elevations of 1900-2700 m.
