    Species Description - Short-lived perennials from short horizontal rhizomes, glabrous, to 100 cm tall; rhizomes to 6 cm long, to 2 cm diam. Leaves emersed, dark green to green-brown, petiolate; blades ovate to elliptic, entire, with 5-9 veins, 6.5-32 cm long, 2.5-19.1 cm wide, the pellucid markings absent or present as separate lines, the apex acute to obtuse, the base slightly round-acute to truncate to cordate; petioles terete throughout, ridged, 17.5-45 cm long, 3-6 mm diam., the base with a sheath to 9 cm long. Inflorescence racemose, of 3-9 whorls, decumbent, overtopping the leaves, often vegetatively proliferating, to 62 cm long, 8-18 cm wide, the whorls with 3-15 flowers, the rachis triangular; peduncles slightly ridged, terete, 35-56 cm long; bracts subulate, coarse throughout, shorter than pedicel subtended, separate, 10-21 mm long, 4-6 mm wide, the apex long attenuate; pedicels erect to ascending in flower and fruit, cylindric, 2.1-7.5 cm long, ca. 0.5 mm diam. Flowers to 25 mm wide; sepals spreading, 10-12-veined, 7-8 mm long, 2-4 mm wide, the veins with or without papillae; petals not clawed, 8-10.5 mm long, ca. 7.5 mm wide; stamens ca. 22, the anthers 1.1-1.2 mm long, obtuse, the filaments 1.5-2.5 mm long; carpels numerous. Fruit oblanceolate, terete, 3-4-ribbed, with keel, glandular, separating when mature, 2-3.5 mm long, 0.9-1.5 mm wide, the glands 3-4, linear, between the ribs, the beak terminal, erect, 1-1.3 mm long.
