  • Description

Latin Diagnosis - Nervis secundariis foliorum conspicue arcuatim connexis, floribus parvis, quoad structuram dANectandram viburnoidem accedentibus a con-generibus diversa.

Species Description - Trees (type specimen from a4 m tree). Branchlets 5 cm below terminal bud 1.5-2.8 mm in diam., slightly angular, with a dense, pale grey cover of short, tightly appressed hairs, older twigs roundish, indument subpersistent; terminal buds narrowly lanceolate, densely covered with ± short, tightly appressed hairs. Petioles 612 mm long, 1.2-2 mm thick, apparently rolled, i.e., ± round but deeply canaliculate above, indument as on twigs. Leaves alternate, oblong, widest ca. 1/2-3/5 from the base, 10-24 cm long, 2.5-6 cm wide, 3.3-4 2 times longer than wide, relatively abruptly acuminate at the tip, base acute to obtuse, or rounded immediately at the petiole, margin flat, abruptly curved upwards at the petiole, midrib distinctly impressed above, prominent below, secondary veins ± impressed above, clearly raised below, (8-)10-13 pairs, diverging at 50-75°, in mid-lamina running at an angle of 45-65° to the midrib, distinctly loop-connected near the margin, tertiary venation mixed, with only a few percurrent veinlets, inconspicuous, ± level above, very slightly raised below. Indument consisting of short, tightly appressed hairs only, initially dense on midrib above, subpersistent, the lamina glabrous, initially ± sparse below, subglabrescent, very inconspicuous. Gland dots usually not visible. Inflorescences in the axils of leaves on young growth, 0.4-0.8 mm in diam. at the base, on a twig of 1.5-2 mm diam., ca. 4-5 cm long, reaching 1/5-1/3 the length of the subtending leaf; peduncle 2-3 cm long, i.e., 1/2 to 2/3 the length of the inflorescence, lateral branches (0-)2 below terminal cluster of cymes, branched once or twice, indument consisting of very short, tightly appressed, pale hairs, ± dense on peduncle, becoming intermediate to moderately sparse closer to the flowers. Pedicels 3-6 mm long, 0.30.5 mm thick. Flowers ca. 4.5 mm in diam., tepals ± triangular, ca. 1.4-1.7 mm long and ca. 1 mm wide, covered with relatively long, fine papillae on the inside surface. Stamens ca. 0.81 mm long including a short but distinct filament of ca. 0.2 mm, anthers papillose at the tip, ± broadly rhombic in the two outer whorls, with an obtuse or less frequently acute tip, in the third whorl ± spatulate with a broadly obtuse tip. Staminodes relatively large, reaching 1/2-2/3 the length of the stamens, ± lanceolate, with a few hairs at the filament Pistil ca. 0.8 mm long, glabrous, pear-shaped, stigma almost sessile. Receptacle broadly hemispherical, glabrous inside. Fruit unknown.

  • Discussion

Nectandra brochidodroma is one of the most striking new species. Although several species of Nectandra tend to have the distal secondary veins loop-connected, none of them has such a pronounced “collecting vein” as N. brochidodroma. Because of this characteristic feature sterile or fruiting material of this species will most likely be placed in Pleurothyrium, where this character is common. The flowers, however, clearly show that it is a true Nectandra, related to N. canaliculata and N. viburnoides of the N. cissiflora group.
