  • Description

Species Description - Plants small, glossy; rhizoids purple; stems to 1 cm tall. Leaves lanceolate above scarcely broader base, mostly 2-3 mm long, involute and incurved when dry; margins of upper lamina entire, bordered all around with elongate hyaline cells; margins of lower lamina entire to ciliate at shoulders; median leaf cells isodiametric, mostly ca. 10-12 m, smooth to bulging-papillose dorsally and ventrally; gemmae infrequent, on ventral surface at leaf tips. Sporophytes nearly immersed; seta 2-2.5 mm long; capsule 1 mm long; peristome lacking; operculum 0.75 mm long. Spores 33-38 µm, finely and bluntly papillose. Calyptra mitrate-campanulate, 1.1 mm long, papillose above.

  • Discussion

The leaves of S. annotinus are quite variable in that cilia may be present or absent at the shoulders, and the leaf cells range from smooth to bulging-papillose. Nonetheless, this moss is easy to recognize by its low stature and soil habitat. Its mitrate-campanulate calyptra is very unusual in Syrrhopodon.

  • Distribution

Endemic to Amazonia; Venezuela and Brazil. Mostly on rock and soil, rarely on dead wood, at low elevations.
