    Species Description - Tree; young shoots glabrous, brown, becoming very rough, cracked, lenticellate. Stipules absent. Leaves 11-15 × 5-5.7 cm, oblong elliptic, apex rounded, base shortly narrowly attenuate, glabrous above, densely puberulous below, forming a pellicle; chartaceous; midrib sunken on the upper surface; secondaries 20-25 pairs, higher order venation obscure. Petiole 2.4-3.4 cm long, slightly channelled at the apex, glabrous. Flowers 3-5 in a fascicle. Pedicel ca. 1 cm long, scurfy-puberulous. Sepals 6-6.5 mm long, broadly lanceolate, apex acute to obtuse, scurfy puberulous outside, glabrous inside except for some indumentum near the margin. Corolla glabrous, ca. 6.5 mm long, tube ca. 2 mm long; lobes six, divided to base into three segments, median segment elliptic, clawed, apex obtuse; lateral segments shorter than the median segment (ca. 3.5 mm long), lanceolate, acute. Stamens six, glabrous; filaments ca. 3 mm long, shortly connate to the staminodes; anthers 2-2.2 mm long, lanceolate. Staminodes six, glabrous, ca. 3 mm long, broadly oblong or irregular and expanded above, with a deeply cut and fimbriate margin.     M. spectabilis is known only from the type gathering from the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica, near Limon, an area formerly covered by wet lowland tropical forest.
