    Genus Description - base; corolla blue or blue-purple to magenta, rarely white, tubular-campanulate above a narrow basal tube, pubescent to essentially glabrous outside; anthers glabrous, often 1-thecate, the staminode elongate, exceeding the stamens, variously glandular-pubescent especially at the tip; pollen grains 3-colpate, the exine smooth; ovary flattened-cylindrical, glabrous or pubescent (even in the same species), the ovules ca. 8-seriate in each locule; disk pulvinate. Fruit an oblong capsule strongly flattened perpendicularly to the septum, dehiscing perpendicular to the septum and parallel to the plane of compression, the valves variously glabrous or lepidote, often with undulate margins; seeds thin, winged, the wings membranaceous, hyaline or brownish. A neotropical genus of 49 species, ranging from Guatemala and the Antilles to northern Argentina. The presumably primitive section Dilobos is concentrated in Brazil; section Monolobos is more evenly distributed but has more species in northwestern South America and the West Indies.
