Description
Species Description - Shrub or tree, 2.0-7.5 m high. Branchlets slender, tips strigose. Leaves elliptic to obovate-oblong or -elliptic, apex for ca 1.5 cm cuspidate-acuminate, subacute, base cuneate to rounded, pubescent with ascending or spreading hairs beneath along midrib and lateral nerves, sparsely minutely strigose or glabrous between them, remotely and obscurely serrulate or subentire, 8.0-12.0 cm long, 2.5-5.0 cm broad, lateral nerves 6 pairs, ascending, prominent on both faces, veins transverse, dense, slightly raised on both faces, reticulation of veinlets rather obscure; petiole slender, strigillose, 3.0-8.0 mm long; stipules lance-triangular, 1.5-2.0 mm long, caducous. Racemes solitary, or 2-3 clustered in the upper leaf axils, slender, rather loosely flowered, hispidulous-strigillose, (2.0-)3.5-6.5(-11.0) cm long; pedicels articulate at base, glabrous, 1.0-2.0 mm long; bracts and bracteoles ca 0.8 mm long. Flowers [male and female]. Sepals 4, ovate, cucullate, obscurely serrulate, glabrous, ca 1.0 mm long. Stamen more or less as long as or longer than the ovary; filament 4-5 times longer than anthers. Ovary rather densely hispid-pilose; style-branches acute, 0.3-0.4 mm long. Fruit 3.0-5.0 mm long, laxly pubescent; seeds 3, ovoid, 3.0 mm long, 2.5 mm broad.
Distribution and Ecology - Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela; in forest at low alt., occasionally up to 800 m.
