Description
Description - Shrub, 3.0-4.0 m tall, with yellowish-ferrugineous-stellate-tomentose slender branchlets. Leaves ovate, or ovate-oblong, apex acuminate, tip acute or obtuse, base broadly cuneate-obtuse, or often rounded and more or less deeply auriculate, firmly chartaceous, laxly strigose-hairy and somewhat scabrid to the touch above, yellowish-ferrugineous-stellate-tomentose beneath initially, glabrescent with age except midrib, lateral nerves and veins beneath, subcrenate-serrate, 9.0-18.0(-22.0) cm long, (5.0-)6.0-10.0(-13.0) cm broad, lateral nerves (9-) 10-12 pairs prominent beneath, reticulation of veins and veinlets not impressed above, a little raised beneath; petiole rusty-stellate-tomentose, (2.0-)2.5-3.5(-5.0) cm long. Racemes spiciform, terminal, showy, many- and dense-flowered, all over rusty-stellate-tomentose, 20.0-25.0 cm long incl peduncle; rhachis robust; pedicels slender, articulate near the middle, (1.0-)1.5-2.0 cm long. Calyx lobes or sepals 4, narrowly lanceolate, tip subulate, tomentose outside, glabrous inside, greenish when fresh, becoming reddish when dry, 7.0-8.0 mm long, 2.5-3.0 mm broad at base. Stamens 30-35. Ovary tomentulose; style glabrous, 7.0-8.0 mm long. Capsule globose, tomentose, 5.0-6.0 mm diam; seeds numerous, narrowly oblongoid, black, 1.5 mm long.

Distribution
S Peru (Huancavelica, Cuzco, Apurimac); in bush savannah vegetation or sheltered quebrada within the “ceja de la montaña,” 2500-3500 m. Very close to Abatia rugosa from C Peru, and perhaps only a southern variant of it.
