Description
Number of genera: 46
Number of species: 1350
Distribution (from PLANTAE): This family is pantropical. The greatest concentration of genera and species is in South-East Asia. They are chiefly forest floor plants growing in humus-rich shade or semi-shade habitats. Due to the great difficulty of preserving the flowers, taxonomic work is difficult and several genera are incompletely known.
