    Distribution (from PLANTAE): This family with its few genera is rich in species, the largest genus, Smilax, being pantropical-subtropical with the center in America; in Europe, Eastern Asia and North America it reaches into temperate regions. The other genera have smaller East-Asiatic distributions, except Ripogonum, which occurs from Australia to New Guinea and New Zealand.
