Taxonomic notes (from PLANTAE): The Piperales, containing Piperaceae, Peperomiaceae and Saururaceae form a natural group long thought to have been derived from the Magnoliales. Burger (1977) suggested that the Piperaceae and the Nymphaeales may in fact be derived from monocots.
Distribution (from PLANTAE): This family is widespread in the tropics of both the Old and New Worlds, often occupying mesic, shady habitats.
