    Taxonomic notes (from PLANTAE): Related to the Theaceae, but differ in the predominance of epiphytic forms and lianas, considerably more specialized flowers, more specialized vessels, fibers, and axial parenchyma, more complex structure of the vascular system of petiole, presence of raphids, cellular endosperm, development of endospermal (micorpylar) haustoria in Marcgravia. Norantea (about 35 species), characterized by scalariform perforations with numerous bars, is relatively the most archaic genus.
