    Distribution (from PLANTAE): This family is most richly represented in the Southern Hemisphere where one subfamily forms a climax group in the winter rainfall area of South Africa. Another comparable center is in tropical and subtropical America. The genus Isophysis, which is probably a relict, occurs only in Tasmania.
