Distribution (from PLANTAE): All members of this family are indigenous to the Americas with the exception of one species doubtfully native in West Africa. In America the family makes up a conspicuous part of the epiphyte vegetation in monsoon forests, rain forests and mist forests, and terrestrial genera are important in various dry habitats. In the Andes bromeliaceous taxa ascend to 4,000m.
