    Type: Holotype: Colombia, Triana s.n. (BM!).

    Description: Shrubs 1-3 m tall, the branchlets and elevated primary leaf veins below farinose-furfuraceous with minute hairs mostly less than 0.1 mm long. Leaves 7-9-nerved, ovate, 12.5-25 cm long, 7.5-20 cm wide, above glabrous to caducously strigillose, glabrous on the actual surface below, apex acuminate, base cordate to subcordate, the margin entire to obscurely serrulate. Inflorescence a cyme 1-2.5 cm long (branched at or near the base) borne in the axils of upper leafy branches, the axes farinose-furfuraceous with an admixture of clavate glands; flowers 4-merous, pedicels 0.5-1 mm long, the persistent subulate bracteoles 0.5-1 X 0.5-1 mm. Hypanthia moderately covered with inconspicuous clavate glandular hairs. Calyx lobes depressed-triangular, somewhat scarious, 0.5-1 X 1 mm, mostly obscured by the triangular-ovate exterior teeth 0.7-1 mm long. Petals pink, reddish, or white, glabrous, linear-oblong, 1.5-2 X 0.5-0.7 mm. Filaments 1-1.5 mm long; anther sacs yellow, 1 mm long with a truncate to ventrally inclined pore; connective simple, not prolonged basally. Ovary 4-locular, completely inferior, the apex glabrous; berry ca 3-4.5 mm diam, dark purplish-black when ripe. Seeds smooth, dark brown, 0.2 mm long.

    Habitat and Distribution: Local, disturbed sites, rain forest margins. 100-800 m. Also in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. COSTA RICA (Almeda et al. 3319, CAS); N (Neill 3316, CAS); PANAMA (Almeda et al. 6081, CAS).
