Leandra subseriata (Naudin) Cogn.

  • Description

Description Author and Date: Frank Almeda, based on Almeda, F. (2009). Melastomataceae. In: G. Davidse, M. Sousa-Sânchez, S. Knapp, & F. Chiang (eds.), Flora Mesoamericana: Cucurbitaceae a Polemoniaceae. 4(1): 164-338.

Description: Shrub very much like L. melanodesma in all characters except some pubescence details; abaxial foliar surface moderately to copiously stellulate puberulent (on primary and higher order veins) and sparsely puberulent (on the surface) with pinoid to stipitate-stellate hairs and sometimes sparsely setose basally along the primary veins; hypanthium sparsely to moderately stellulate puberulent and sometimes (especially basally) sparsely setulose. 2n=34.

Habitat and Distribution: Cloud forest, disturbed roadsides, cultivated fields. 1400-2800 m. (W. and S. Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador.) MEXICO: Chiapas (Breedlove & Almeda, CAS); GUATEMALA (Contreras 11024, CAS); HONDURAS (Croat & Hannon 63788, CAS); EL SALVADOR (Croat 42489, CAS); COSTA RICA (Standley & Williams 1963:458); PANAMA (Allen 1343, MO).

Taxonomy and Systematics: This species is doubtfully worthy of species status. An analysis of the pubescence differences between it and L. melanodesma is needed from throughout their extensive neotropical range.

Notes: [Description based only on Mesoamerican specimens.]
