Description

Description: Inflorescences paniculate, the bracteoles usually deciduous; hypanthium prolonged or not above ovary apex; calyx lobes 5, free, persistent; petals 5; ovary 2-locular, the ovules 2 per locule, the stigma punctiform. Fruits usually red to back, crowned by the calyx lobes. Seeds 1 or 2, the seed coat membranous; embryo myrcioid.
Diversity and distribution: Ca. 300 species in the Neotropics.
Taxonomic notes: This generic description was prepared for the Plants and Lichens of Saba.
