Description: Shrubs 1-3 m tall, the branchlets, petioles, inflorescences, and hypanthia densely covered with smooth spreading hairs 1-2 mm long, underlain with stellate hairs. Leaves 5-plinerved, lanceolate, oblong-lanceolate, or elliptic, 7.3-14.5 X 2-5 cm, adaxially sparsely to moderately setose with hairs 1-1.5 mm long intermixed with a sparse caducous cover of delicate cottony stellate hairs, abaxially moderately setose with hairs 1 mm long and a sparse admixture of stellate hairs on the primary and higher order veins, apex acute to short-acuminate, base acute to rounded, the margin ciliolate-serrulate to subentire; petioles 0.5-1.9 cm long. Inflorescence 4-15 cm long; flowers 5-merous, sessile and secund on outermost branchlets, the persistent bracteoles lance-oblong to lance-triangular, 1-1.5 X 0.5 mm. Calyx tube ca. 0.5 mm long, the lobes broadly deltoid, 0.5 mm long, the bluntly tuberculate exterior teeth 0.5 mm long and tipped with a smooth hair 0.5 mm long. Petals oblong-obovate, 2.5-3 X 1-1.5 mm. Anthers isomorphic, linear-oblong, 2.5-3 mm long, white to yellowish, the pore somewhat ventrally inclined, connective not prolonged but ventrally bilobed at the base. Style glabrous, 5-6 mm long, stigma truncate to capitellate; ovary 3-locular, 1/2 inferior, berry 4-5 X 4-5 mm, purple-black at maturity. Seeds pyramidate, angulate and vaguely granulate, 1 mm long.

Habitat and Distribution: Locally common, rain forest margins, gallery forest in pine savannas, stream margins, and disturbed sites. 0-1200 m. Southern Mexico (Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Veracruz southward), Greater Antilles (Cuba), Trinidad, Guyana, Surinam, Venezuela and Colombia to Bolivia, S Brazil, and Paraguay. MEXICO: Tabasco (Cowan 3331, CAS); Chiapas (Breedlove & Almeda 57647, CAS); BELIZE (Nee et al. 46804, CAS); GUATEMALA (Contreras 2874, CAS); HONDURAS (Nelson & Vargas 5063, CAS); EL SALVADOR (Sidwell et al. 763, CAS); NICARAGUA (Stevens & Moreno 19637, CAS); COSTA RICA (Almeda & Nakai 4071, CAS); PANAMA (Hammel 1774, CAS).

Taxonomy and Systematics: Some populations of this species have the leaf blade briefly decurrent on the petiole but this appears to be sporadic and shows no correlation with habitat, geography, or other characters.
