    Type: Type: Brazil. São Paulo: inter Lorena et Mochy das Cruzes. Martius s.n. (syntypes: G-DC-fragment, M-2 sheets).

    Description: Trees up to 3 m tall; young branches flattened, with slight interpetiolar ridges, densely covered by dendritic trichomes of very short arms. Leaves discolorous; petioles 1.5-4 cm; blades 26-35 x 11-19 cm, elliptic, apex shortly acuminate, base decurrent, margin entire, chartaceous, longitudinal nerves 3, sometimes with an additional faint, marginal pair, supra-basal, 1.5-4.5 mm above the base, abaxial surface densely covered by a ferrugineous indument consisting of sessile-stellate trichomes, ca. 0.1 mm diam. and sparsely covered by dendritic trichomes, ca. 0.1 mm diam. Panicles 25 x 15 cm, glomerulate, terminal, densely covered by sessile-stellate trichomes to dendritic trichomes with short arms, ca. 0.1 mm diam.; bracts and bracteoles caducous. Flowers 5-merous. Hypanthium 2.5 mm long, campanulate, inner surface glabrous, outer densely covered by sessile-stellate trichomes of short arms, ca. 0.1–0.2 mm diam.; torus glabrous. Calyx truncate, caducous in fruit, inner surface glabrous, outer with trichomes similar to the ones on the hypanthium; tube 0.6 mm long, outer teeth 0.1-0.2 mm long. Petals 2.3-2.5 x 1.4 mm. Stamens white, slightly dimorphic; filaments 2.1-2.3 mm long, glabrous; connectives up to 0.2 mm prolonged below the thecae, small stamens unnapendaged, longer stamens with a dorsal tooth; anthers 1.3 mm long, oblong, with a single terminal, moderate pore, ca. 0.3 mm. Ovary 1.6 mm long, 1/3 adherent to the hypanthium, 2-3-locular, apex glabrous; style 4.5-4.8 mm long, straight to curved, punctiform, glabrous. Fruits up to 4.7-5.5 mm diam., purple, 1-3 seeds.

    Habitat and Distribution: Miconia brunnea occurs in the montane forests in Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Paraná states.
