Description
Description: Epiphytic, lianoid shrub; stem terete, striate, cinereous, glabrous, the bark cracking longitudinally; twigs subterete, complanate, bluntly angled, striate, glabrous. Leaves coriaceous to subcoriaceous, ovate to oblong, 10-13(-22.5) x 3-6(-7) cm, base rounded, subcuneate, or subcordate, apex acuminate, margin entire, glabrous, nitid; 3-5-plinerved from near the base, spreading near margins, midrib slightly raised above, prominent beneath, lateral nerves slightly raised above to plane, raised beneath, reticulate veinlets slightly raised above, otherwise obscure; petiole subterete, rugose, 4-6(-9) mm long, weakly puberulent. Inflorescence axillary, racemose, 8-20-flowered; rachis subterete, bluntly angled, striate, 1.5-4 cm long, puberulent; floral bract ovate, acute-acuminate, ca. 2 mm long, glabrous or puberulent at base, ciliolate and minutely glandular-fimbriate marginally; pedicel subterete, subrugose, striate, 8-11 mm long, glabrous or puberulent; bracteoles located near base of pedicel, ovate, acute-acuminate, 1-2 mm long, densely puberulent or glabrous, margin sparsely glandular-fimbriate. Flowers with calyx 3-4 mm long, puberulent; hypanthium subcylindric, sparsely puberulous, ca. 2 mm long and 2 mm diam.; limb spreading-campanulate, 1-2 mm long; lobes oblong-ovate, apiculate, 0.5-1 mm long; sinuses acute; corolla thin-caronose, tubular but gradually narrowing distally, pentagonal, 16-34 mm long and ca. 7 mm diam. when fresh, glabrous or sparsely puberulent, dull dark red to scarlet, the lobes reflexed, oblong, subacute, ca. 1.5-4 mm long, greenish; stamen alternately 7.5-10 mm and 8.5-11 mm long; filaments equal, 4-6 mm long, glabrous, produced into slender connectives, these minutely pilose with hairs up to 0.2 mm long; anthers alternately 5-7 mm and 6-8 mm long; thecae ca. 3.5-4.5 mm long, elongated at the base; tubules ca. 1.5-2.5 mm long, the tips without ornamentation, dehiscing by pores 1.5-2 mm long; style glabrous. Berry spherical, at least 10-13 mm diam., glabrous, dark blue-black.
Distribution: Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil; (in Amazonia: white sand savannas), tropical moist and wet forest to premontane wet and rainforest, at (100-)400-1200 m altitude.
