  • Description

    Description: Epiphytic shrub with young branches pendent to 2 m long; stems terete, striate, glabrate; bark dark reddish-brown; twigs terete, striate, densely pilose with white, unicellular hairs 1-1.2 mm long. Leaves thin-coriaceous, narrowly ovate to linear-ovate, 15-35 x 5-7 mm, apically long-acuminate, basally obtuse, the margins slightly revolute, entire, upper surface somewhat rugose or pustular, short-pilose, lower surface densely pilose with white, unicellular hairs; 3(-5)-plinerved from the base, the midrib impressed above and raised beneath, the lateral nerves raised above and inconspicuous beneath, the reticulate veinlets obscure; petiole subterete, striate, rugose, ca. 1 mm long, densely pilose as twigs. Inflorescence with solitary, axillary, pendent flowers; floral bract broadly deltate, acute, ca. 0.5 mm long, ciliate; pedicel terete, striate, 2-3 mm long, articulate with calyx, pilose; bracteoles located near base of pedicel, similar to floral bract. Flowers 5-merous, with calyx 6-7 mm long; hypanthium cylindric to obconical, terete, ca. 2 mm long, densely pilose so as to obscure surface, the limb campanulate, ca. 4-5 mm long; lobes narrowly triangular, long-acuminate, 3.5-4.5 mm long, pilose; sinuses rounded; corolla cylindric to base (not ventricose), bright red, nitid, 28-30 x ca. 4 mm, short-pilose within and without, the lobes narrowly triangular, long-acuminate, 13-14 mm long, strongly reflexed at anthesis; stamens 10, ca. 28 mm long; filaments connate, 6-7 mm long, glabrous; anthers 22-23 mm long; thecae ca. 4 mm long, papillate; tubules very narrow, ca. 18 mm long, dehiscing by oblique slits, ca. 1 mm long; style 28-30 mm long, glabrous. Fruit not seen.

    Distribution: Endemic to Peru, and known only from the type collection. Rare and probably endangered.

    Cultivated: AGB, BONN, HEID, NY.

    Type: Peru. Lambayeque: Hacienda Taulis, SE of Chiclayo, up the Río Sana to Florida and higher, 2200 m, ca. 8?S, 79?2'W, 19 Jun 1990 (fl), Rauh 68468 (holotype, HEID; isotype, NY).
