Description
Huge tree, 30-40 m tall, with crown above main canopy. Trunk slightly buttressed, only branching towards top. Fruits huge pyxidia, weighing up to 15 lbs. when full, which hang downwards and remain on tree after dehiscence of the "cap" (operculum). Seeds resemble squids, 16 cm long, dangle within pyxidia, attached by the fleshy arils (and funicles?), apparently as an adaptation for bat dispersal. Fruits have a pumpkin-like odor when bruised.
