  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Although this site record already contained Lat/Long coordinates, it was georeferenced again because the coordinates that existed previously were clearly poorly matched to the locality description. The origin of these pre-existing coordinates is also suspect because they do not appear in the collectors original field notes. Therefore, georeferenced (as new) to 4.5 km N along BA 001 (the coastal road linking Prado to Cumuruxatiba) measured from the center of the town of Prado towards Cumuruxatiba, in Mun. Prado, Bahia. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, located the towns of Prado and Cumuruxatiba, and the coastal road that links them, BA 001. Beginning at the point along BA 001 closest to the approximate geographic center of Prado (-17.3238469 -39.2263412; completely uninhabited subdivisions to the north and across a stream from the town were not included into estimates of the center and extent of Prado), used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure approximately 4.5 km (4.50011 km) along BA 001 towards Cumuruxatiba. Using Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs, found coordinates (final) for the offset. Using Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) found the linear extent of the starting location of the offset, the town of Prado, by measuring from the chosen starting coordinates along BA 001 near the center of town to the farthest extent of town (-17.3050721 -39.2245173; See note above regarding the estimation of the extent of Prado). Input linear extent (2.09823 km), distance precision (1/2 km) and measurement error (0.0005 km) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to the Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Offset: Offset along a path).
